Naruto is considered the greatest ninja comic of all time. Selling over 250 million copies worldwide, the manga has been adapted into two anime, several films, multiple video games, and other forms of media. It also has an ongoing sequel.
The main focus of the story is Naruto Uzumaki, an optimistic and cheerful ninja who seeks recognition from the people around him. Naruto often gets in trouble for his mischief. He is the weakest kid in the Ninja Academy. But despite all odds, he dreams of becoming the Hokage someday.
The Naruto manga has 700 chapters in total, which are contained in 72 volumes.

Masashi Kishimoto’s Biography
Masashi Kishimoto, born on November 8, 1974, in Nagi, Japan, is a popular manga artist. He is known for his most successful work, Naruto, a ninja comic that sold over 250 million copies in 46 countries.
Besides being a manga artist, Kishimoto has also supervised the anime films, The Last: Naruto the Movie, and Boruto: Naruto the Movie. He has also written many stories and illustrated artwork for several novels.
In addition to the Naruto manga, Kishimoto has written another manga series titled Samurai 8: The Tale of Hachimaru, from 2019 to 2020. In 2020, he replaced Mikio Ikemoto as the writer of the Boruto manga.
Some of his other works include:
- Karakuri: Karakuri was his first successful manga. He submitted it to Shueisha Inc. in 1995. The manga later won the Hop Step Award.
- Bench: It is a one-shot manga published in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 2010.
- Mario: Shueisha released it as another one-shot manga in June 2013.
Who is Naruto Uzumaki?
Naruto is the protagonist of the Naruto manga series. He belongs to the village hidden in the leaves, and he is the child of the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, and Kushina Uzumaki. To protect him from Minato’s enemies, the third Hokage gives Naruto his mother’s surname.
Naruto is initially hated by everyone in the village because the vicious nine-tailed fox’s spirit is sealed inside him. To cope with this hatred, he begins to create trouble in the village for attention.
He has zero talent to become a ninja; he is a class clown, and he cannot perform even the simplest jutsus. But Naruto has a firm belief that he will become the Hokage someday and surpass all of the previous Hokage.
As time passes, Naruto grows stronger and acquires many extraordinary powers. But his real power lies in his ability to befriend everyone, even his enemies. His ninja way is to never go back on his words. Naruto’s cheerful nature and his dedication make everyone want to help him move ahead.

The volumes are divided into two parts. The first part focuses on a preteen Naruto. He grows from a troublemaking kid to a determined ninja. In the second part, Naruto is portrayed as a mature teenager. He has acquired new powers through training, but he is still as innocent as he used to be.
Part I
Part I of the Naruto manga comprises the first 27 volumes. It contains 244 chapters in total. Part I was adapted into an anime of the same name.
Naruto, Volume 01: Uzumaki Naruto (2000)
Volume 1 was originally released on March 3, 2000, and the English version came out on August 6, 2003. The manga contains 7 chapters spread over 192 pages.
A nine-tailed fox spirit attacked the village hidden in the leaves twelve years ago. The fourth Hokage and many other capable shinobi had to give up their lives to defend the village from the terrifying beast. But now the times are peaceful.
A kid named Naruto has joined the Leaf’s Ninja Academy. He is a knucklehead, and he likes to create trouble for attention. Naruto is nothing like a ninja, but he is serious about one thing: he wants to surpass all of the previous Hokage!
Naruto, Volume 02: The Worst Client (2000)
Volume 2 was originally released on June 2, 2000, and the English version came out on December 17, 2003. The manga contains chapters 8 to 17.
Naruto is now a genin. His other teammates on Team 7 are Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno. The leader of the team is the legendary copying ninja, Kakashi Hatake. Team 7 is assigned the task of escorting Tazuna, a bridge-builder, safely to his village. The mission seems easy, but there’s more to it than Tazuna lets on. The result? Everybody is in grave danger now.
Naruto, Volume 03: For the Sake of Dreams…!! (2000)
Volume 3 was originally released on August 4, 2000, and the English version came out on April 14, 2004. The manga contains chapters 18 to 27.
Kakashi is severely injured during Zabuza’s attack on Team 7. While recovering, he trains the team to defend Tazuna and his family from the demon of the Hidden Mist village. But Zabuza has a dangerous apprentice named Haku, who specializes in ice release. As the bridge-building progresses, the dangers grow. Team 7 must remain prepared.
Naruto, Volume 04: The Hero’s Bridge!! (2000)
Volume 4 was originally released on October 4th, 2000, and the English version came out on August 3rd, 2004. The manga contains chapters 28 to 36.
During Naruto and Sasuke’s fight with Haku, Sasuke saves Naruto and seems to have been killed in the process. This angers Naruto and awakens the fox spirit within him. Shinobis are merely tools for killing; they must learn to set aside their morals. But can Naruto do it?
The battle between Zabuza and Team 7 ends tragically, and the heroes return to the Leaf village. The Chūnin exams are approaching, and ninjas from other villages have come to take part in them. What unique and deadly jutsus have they mastered?

Volume 5 was originally released on December 4, 2000, and the English version came out on December 7, 2004. The manga contains chapters 37 to 45.
Team 7 has signed up to participate in the Chūnin exams, and they must qualify to be promoted to the Chūnin level. But they soon learn that it won’t be as easy.
The number of skills, stealth, and battle expertise required to pass the exams is large. Not to mention the other deadly ninjas they will be facing.
The worst part of the exams is that either the whole team qualifies or the whole team fails. With Team 7 as strong as their weakest link, Naruto, will the three of them qualify?
Naruto, Volume 06: Predator (2001)
Volume 6 was originally released on March 2, 2001, and the English version came out on April 5, 2005. The manga contains chapters 46 to 54.
Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura somehow passed the first level of the Chūnin exams, but things have only begun now. The second round is about testing survival skills. They are to enter the Forest of Death and acquire both heaven and earth scrolls within 5 days to qualify. Instructor Mitarashi Anko is excited to fail half of the genin this round.
But the most dangerous twist comes when a mysterious impostor is introduced. A frightening villain who is after Sasuke for some reason. Can Team 7 survive the Forest of Death?
Naruto, Volume 07: The Path You Should Tread (2001)
Volume 7 was originally released on May 1, 2001, and the English version came out on August 2, 2005. The manga contains chapters 55 to 63.
The villain is revealed to be a former Leaf ninja named Orochimaru. He puts a curse mark on Sasuke and disappears. Team 7 is still healing from this. There are also these Sound Village ninjas they need to worry about. Sasuke’s infection is growing, and he has become unstable. They still need to acquire both scrolls to qualify, and they are running out of time.
Naruto, Volume 08: Life-and-Death Battles (2001)
Volume 8 was originally released on August 3, 2001, and the English version came out on December 6, 2005. The manga contains chapters 64 to 72.
The third and final round of the Chūnin exams has begun. The ninjas must battle each other one-on-one. Despite Sakura’s pleas, Sasuke enters the battle to face a Sound Village ninja. But his opponent has some deadly techniques up his sleeves. With all the changes going on inside Sasuke, can he emerge victorious? There’s also this mysterious curse mark he needs to worry about. Naruto, Volume 09: Neji vs. Hinata (2001)
Volume 9 was originally released on October 4th, 2001, and the English version came out on March 7th, 2006. The manga contains chapters 73 to 81.
As the third round of the Chūnin exam progresses, interesting facts about the characters are revealed. Naruto uses a secret technique to defeat his opponents, Kiba Inuzuka and his cute little ninja hound. But will that be enough?
Neji and Hinata, who belong to the Hyuga clan, are to battle each other. Neji holds some grudges against her, and that might make this duel more dangerous.
Naruto, Volume 10: A Splendid Ninja (2001)

The third round is getting more intense. The much-awaited duel between the Leaf’s ninja Rock Lee and Gaara from the Sand Village is due shortly. Gaara is as vicious as he is mysterious. Volume 15 was originally released on December 20, 2002, and the English version came out on July 3, 2007. The manga contains chapters 127 to 135.
Naruto is engaged in a fight against Gaara. During the battle, they exchange words, and Naruto is able to sympathize with him. But sympathy is of no help here. Gaara is mutating faster, and the demon inside him might take over his body any minute now. Naruto needs to defeat Gaara and, most importantly, save his friends.
Naruto, Volume 16: Eulogy (2003)
Volume 16 was originally released on March 4, 2003, and the English version came out on September 4, 2007. The manga contains chapters 136–144.
Orochimaru’s attack has left the village devastated. Many have died defending it, including the third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. The village’s elders ask Jiraiya to become the next Hokage. Jiraiya is trying to find Tsunade, a legendary Hidden Leaf kunoichi who left the village years ago. While traveling, he is also training Naruto.

Orochimaru finally reveals what he wants from Sasuke, and he is definitely up to no good. Naruto goes after Sasuke, but he must defeat Kimimoro first. Kimimoro is somehow connected to Orochimaru, and he has some mysterious powers. The battle won’t be easy, but Naruto must move forward.
Naruto, Volume 24: Unorthodox (2004)

Part II
Part II refers to the second half of the Naruto storyline. It contains volumes 28 to 72. The story begins two and a half years after the events of Part I. This part includes chapters 245 to 700. Part II was adapted into the anime titled Naruto Shippuden.
Naruto, Volume 28: Homecoming (2005)
Volume 28 was originally released on June 3, 2005, and the English version came out on March 4, 2008. The manga contains chapters 245 to 253.
It’s been two and a half years since Naruto left. He returns back to the Leaf village and meets his friends. All of their ranks are higher than his now. Meanwhile, the terrorist organization known as Akatsuki is becoming more active. Akatsuki members Sasori and Deidara kidnapped Gaara for some mysterious reasons. Naruto hears the news. He must pursue the Akatsuki duo to save his former rival.
Naruto, Volume 29: Kakashi vs. Itachi (2005)
Volume 29 was originally released on August 4th, 2005, and the English version came out on May 6th, 2008. The manga contains chapters 254 to 263.
Akatsuki leader Pain orders Itachi and Kisame to stop Naruto’s team from reaching their hideout. Mighty Gai’s team engages in a fight with Kisame while Kakashi’s team is facing Itachi. The mystery behind Gaara’s kidnapping is finally revealed, and one thing is clear: the Akatsuki is up to no good.
Naruto, Volume 30: Puppet Masters (2005)

Sakura Haruno steps in to fight the powerful Akatsuki member, Sasori of the Red Sand, while Naruto and Kakashi pursue Deidara. Naruto, Volume 32: The Search for Sasuke (2006)
Volume 32 was originally released on April 4, 2006, and the English version came out on November 4, 2008. The manga contains chapters 281 to 289.
In his final moments, Sasori reveals something important that could lead Team 7 to Sasuke. After the battle is over, Naruto and his team are back in the Leaf. A new ninja is to replace Sasuke in their new mission, but he might be hiding something. Meanwhile, Orochimaru has his own problems to deal with. A secret spy is trying to infiltrate his hideout, and the matter needs to be taken care of soon.
Naruto, Volume 33: The Secret Mission (2006)

During his fight with the wicked Orochimaru, Naruto is enraged. He loses consciousness, and the nine-tailed beast takes over. He hurts Sakura in the process and poses a danger to everyone near him. Meanwhile, the new team member, Sai, has his own goals.
Naruto, Volume 34: The Reunion (2006)

Naruto, Volume 35: The New Two (2006)
Volume 35 was originally released on November 2, 2006, and the English version came out on February 3, 2009. The manga contains chapters 310 to 319.
Naruto is unable to bring Sasuke back due to a lack of strength. He is more determined to become stronger. Kakashi introduces a new method to train Naruto in the Leaf. The last surviving member of the Akatsuki, Sasuke Uchiha was granted freedom because of Naruto’s friendship, Sakura’s love, and Kakashi’s trust. Sasuke is a changed man now. Realizing his past mistakes, he travels the world to atone for his sins. While travelling through a forest, he sees a patch of white flowers blooming near a tree and stops to appreciate its beauty.
D. Naruto True Chronicles Series (2015)
Naruto True Chronicles Series, written by Takashi Yano and Shin Towada and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto, contains three books that focus on the characters Itachi Uchiha, and Sasuke Uchiha.
Book 1: Itachi Shinden – Book of Bright Light (September 2015)
Itachi’s story has been divided into two volumes. The first volume, titled Daylight, focuses on a 4-year-old Itachi who has matured beyond his age. He thinks that emotions only act as a hindrance in the life of a shinobi. He keeps things professional and is blunt with other people. But he is actually a kind-hearted child, full of dreams. He wants to become the first Uchiha Hokage and bring peace to his village. But his ideals are tested as he grows up and the people around him try to use his talents for their benefit.
Book 2: Itachi Shinden – Book of Dark Night (October 2015)
The second volume focuses on an 11-year-old Itachi. He befriends a fellow Uchiha named Shisui, and both of them volunteer to join the Anbu. Meanwhile, the bitterness between the Uchiha clan and the villagers grows. This conflict results in his friend’s death. Itachi unlocks new powers and gains Shisui’s eye. He has been entrusted with protecting the village and the Uchiha clan name. With no room for negotiations, Itachi decides to act, and the night of the Uchiha massacre draws near.
Book 3: Sasuke Shinden – Book of Sunrise (November 2015)
The third installment in the Naruto Shinden series, Sasuke Shinden, focuses on Sasuke’s life two years after the end of the Fourth Great Ninja War. Sasuke is no longer an Avenger. The darkness in his heart is gone. But wherever he travels, there is conflict and hatred. Sasuke decides to do something about it in the hope of atoning for his sins.

The third and final art book covers material from mid-2004 to 2014.
F. Naruto Gaiden: The Seventh Hokage and the Scarlet Spring (April 2015)
Written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto, Naruto Gaiden is a spin-off manga serving as a sequel to the Naruto series. The story takes place 15 years after the 4th Great Ninja War. The focus of this story is Sarada Uchiha, Sasuke, and Sakura’s daughter. The plot has been adapted into an anime arc in Boruto, from episodes 19 to 23.
G. Naruto Shinden (2018)
Naruto Shinden, or Naruto: Naruto New Story, is a series comprising 4 light novels. The first novel, titled Konoha Shinden: Steam Ninja Scrolls, was set to release in 2016. It was released later in 2018 along with three other light novels.

Konoha Shinden: Steam Ninja Scrolls is a Naruto spin-off novel featuring Kakashi Hatake and Might Gai. 15 years after the events of the war, Kakashi and Gai are now retired. They travel to the Land of Hot Water to enjoy peaceful times. They also bring a bodyguard along, Asuma and Kirenai’s child, Mirai Sarutobi. Konoha Shinden shows the power of the bonds that connect the two generations.
Naruto Shinden: Parent and Child Day

The seventh Hokage, Naruto Uzumaki is asked to declare a holiday and name it Parent and Child Day. He has no objection to a new holiday besides Sundays, but he doesn’t understand the significance of Parents and Child Day. Naruto, who has not spent much time with his children because of work, agrees to take a day off as Shikamaru offers help.

Unconvinced with Shikamaru’s words, the Tsuchikage demands that Konoha disclose all its information to the 4 Kage in the next summit, failing to do which will mean the Stone Village’s withdrawal from the union. How will Shikamaru solve this problem?
Sasuke Shinden: The Teacher’s Star Pupil

H. Naruto Restuden Series
The Naruto Retsuden series, written by Jun Esaka and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto, contains three light novels that narrate one story. The events of this storyline take place several years after the end of the 4th Great Ninja War.
Book 1: Kakashi Retsuden – The Sixth Hokage and the Failure Boy (2019)
Kakashi Hatake travels to the Land of Redaku, believed to be a peaceful country that was the favorite place of the Sage of Six Paths and his tailed beasts. However, when Kakashi reaches Redaku, he finds reality quite contradictory. There is death in the air, and people seem to be unhappy. He feels unwelcome, and people look at him with suspicion. What could have happened here?
The second chapter of Kakashi Retsuden novel was partly adapted for the anime adaptation of Sasuke Retsuden.
Book 2: Sasuke Retsuden – The Uchiha Descendants and the Heavenly Stardust (2019)
Naruto is suffering from a rare disease that is affecting his chakra flow. Sasuke travels to an Astronomy Research Institute situated in the Land of Redaku to find a cure for this disease. The Institute has now turned into a prison, and there is this weird lizard named Menō who keeps roaming about the hallways. A lot is going on inside, and Sasuke needs to know what it is. Sakura joins him in his mission, and together they must find a cure to heal Naruto before it is too late.
The Sasuke Retsuden novel has received immense love from Naruto fans. It received a manga adaptation in 2022 and an anime adaptation in 2023. Episodes 282 to 286 of Boruto anime cover his story.
Book 3: Naruto Retsuden – Naruto Uzumaki and the Spiral Destiny (2019)
Naruto is suffering from a rare disease that disrupts his chakra flow. His condition is getting more severe. But he needs to pay a visit to the Land of Stairs, where some sinister plotting is going on. Hitmen have been hired to kill him, but why?
I. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations
Written by Ukyō Kodachi and Masashi Kishimoto, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is a manga series serving as a sequel to the Naruto series. The main character of this series is Boruto, Naruto’s son.
The monthly production of the manga began in May 2016. The first episode of the anime was released on April 5, 2017. The production of both the manga and the anime is ongoing.

The book appears in the manga and anime as Jiraiya’s novel. It has Jiraiya’s autograph and is considered to be his work.
Nikaku was believed to have been executed during the First Great Ninja War as a punishment for killing his allies. But he is alive, disguised as a donkey to keep the public from learning the truth. Nikaku and Naruto must start searching for Renge.
Naruto Jinraiden: The Day the Wolf Howled (November 2, 2012)

The timeline followed in the story takes place after Sasuke’s fight with Itachi and before he obtains Itachi’s eyes. Sasuke begins to experience nightmares, and his eyes ache. Tobi offers him Itachi’s eye drops to ease the pain, but there isn’t much of the medicine left. Meanwhile, Sasuke begins to wonder about Tobi’s true intentions.
The Tale of the Utterly Pure-hearted Shinobi (August 4, 2015)

This novel is shown as Jiraiya’s work in manga and anime.
The story is about two people, a man and a woman, who fall in love with each other on the battlefield. This book is the origin of Jiraiya’s “Icha Icha Paradise.”
